Hawks Jump out to 2-0 Lead

The Hagersville Hawks have jumped out to an early 2-0 series lead on the Buford Bulldogs in the opening round of the 2010 playoffs.  Burford opened the scoring just over a minute into the first period and held that lead for the opening 20 minutes.  The lead stood up through most of the second period until Evan Saunders tied the game with 27 seconds remaining in the second period.  Aleck Boyd put the Hawks into the lead five minutes into the third period before power play goals by Nick Halliday and David Watson sealed the game one victory for the Hawks.  Rob Porter stopped 29 shots in the 4-1 win.  Bob Neilson, Derek Medeiros, Ryan Ashurst, Saunders, Watson and Halliday each picked up an assist.

Hagersville traveled to Burford on Sunday night for game two of the best of seven series.  The Bulldogs opened the scoring at the mid point of the opening period before David Watson tied the game with the Hawks first of five power play goals.  Burford regained the lead six minutes into the second period but the Hawks took control from there.  Aleck Boyd, Jay Pepper, and Bob Neilson each scored power play goals in the final thirteen minutes of the 2nd period to take a 4-2 lead into the third.  Evan Saunders and Boyd each scored in the third period to round out the scoring on a 6-2 win.  Saunders, Ashurst and Medeiros each picked up two assists on the night with singles going to Jesse Ross, Watson, Jesse Sommers and Hayden Baird.  Rob Porter stopped 23 shots for the win.

Hawks Drop Weekend Games

The Hagersville Hawks dropped a pair of tightly contested games on the weekend by scores of 5-3 to the Delhi Travellers and 4-3 to the Burford Bulldogs.  On Saturday night, the Hawks dropped a hard fought game to the Travellers.  Hagersville took a 1-0 lead early in the first period but gave up a pair of power play goals late in the period to fall behind 2-1.  Hagersville again jumped on the Travellers early in the second period to tie the game at two before the Delhi special teams replied with a power play and short handed goal to take a 4-2 lead.  Hagersville cut the lead to 4-3 with five minutes to play but Delhi’s second short handed goal of the game with less than 30 seconds left completed the scoring.  Jesse Ross, David Watson and Nick Halliday scored for the Hawks with assists going to Watson with a pair, Sean Wilkinson, Jay Pepper and Ross.

On Sunday, the Hawks traveled to Burford and fell behind 1-0 mid way through the first period but rebounded to tie the game less than 30 seconds later on a goal by Derek Medeiros.  Burford would score three unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead.  Rick Schipper and Wilkinson scored late in the third to cut the deficit to 4-3 but the Hawks would get no closer.  Hayden Baird and Jason Gadoury picked up assists on the two third period goals.  Hagersville travels to Lucan on Wednesday night and Tavistock on Friday night before returning home to face the North Middlesex Stars on Saturday.

Hawks Struggle to Start 2010

After a strong finish to their 2009 schedule, the Hagersville Hawks have struggled to take flight in January loosing four of their past five games.  Saturday night may have been the low point as they dropped a 6-3 decision to the Port Dover Sailors.  After jumping out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Nick Halliday and Aleck Boyd in the first 6 minutes, Hagersville let the foot off the pedal and allowed three unanswered goals to the last place Sailors.  Jesse Sommers quickly replied to tie the game at three in the second period but again the Hawks allowed the Sailors to hang around and they scored late in the second period and twice in the third for the win.  Boyd, Sommers and Derek Medeiros each picked up two points while David Watson and Bob Neilson chipped in with an assist.  Justin Garner stopped 27 shots in a loosing effort as the Hawks out shot Port Dover 41-33.

The Hawks have seven games left before the play-offs start.  The home stretch starts on Saturday night as the Hawks host the division leading Delhi Travellers at 730pm.  Hagersville will then travel to Burford on Sunday night in what is shaping up as a play-off preview for both teams.  Game time is 730pm.

Hawks Improve with Pair of Wins

The Hagersville Hawks improved their record to 13 wins and 7 losses with a pair of wins on the weekend.  Hagersville hit the road for a pair of games and with the wins, they have tightened their grip on 2nd place in the McConnell conference at the mid-point of the 2009-10 season.

On Friday night, the Hawks traveled to Port Stanley and came a way with a tough 3-2 overtime win.  Sean Wilkinson put the Hawks in flight with a first period goal that was assisted by Jesse Sommers and Jake Deuxberry.  The Sailors tied the game early in the second period on a power play goal but Hagersville replied with their own power play goal by Derek Medeiros.  Port Stanley would tie the game midway through the third period but a late penalty to the Sailors put the Hawks power play on the ice to start the overtime.  Thirty-seven seconds into the overtime, Deuxberry won the game for the Hawks with assists going to Bob Neilson and David Watson.  Justin Garner picked up the win stopping 38 shots for Hagersville.

On Saturday, the Hawks traveled to St George to face the Duke’s.  Hagersville jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jesse Sommers at the 5:51 mark of the first period.  The Dukes replied with a pair of goals but Hagersville tied the game at two with less than a minute to play in the opening period on a goal by Kyle Abbott.  After a scoreless second period, Jesse Sommers and David Watson scored in the third period to give Hagersville a 4-2 lead.  St George cut the lead to 4-3 late in the third but Hagersville held on for the win.  Garner earned his 2nd win in as many nights stopping 30 shots in goal.  Kyle Gardener picked up two assists with singles going to Derek Medeiros, Nick Halliday and Ryan Ashurst.
